3D printing is having a major impact in medicine in a number of ways. This is mainly evident in Orthopedic Surgery where doctors use 3D printing to help treat patients musculoskeletal system.

How 3D printing is used in surgery?

In the past, before major surgery is undertaken, doctors would often take extensive X-rays of patients to understand the issues involved. Using these images, doctors would then aim to plan the operation. This was a major challenge and doctors required better tactile feedback to better prepare.

With the accessibility of 3D printing increasing, now departments can cost-effectively print models inhouse. These printed models of bones allows doctors to visually see damage and then be able to practice the most effective treatment plan for patients.
