How to start 3D printing by Phill Luland

How to get from Poser to 3D Printing? I started this project to create a test object to see how fine my machine could print on its fast settings, and to learn about Voronoi modeling. So what better subject than a frog. Most of my work is figurative and I use Poser to create the base model. While I am posing the model I am aware that I want to print the model. Therefore, I try checking that the angles (e.g. the arms are good) and not lose the character of the sculpture. Once i’m satisfied with the shape the next stage is to make the thing ready for my 3D printer.

So for this I use Autodesk Meshmixer a free editing and creating app. This can be the stage that takes the most time. However, it can also be fun and the more you work with this software the more possibilities open to you. The frog model that is created with Poser needs to be manipulated to give it a more handmade look. At the same time you can refine certain parts and reduce the poly count so the file is not too heavy.

Once you sufficiently edit the model, you can make it into a Voronoi shape. Make sure you have given a real dimension before you do this part as the shape created is dependent on its real size. Now the magic happens within Meshmixer with the help of a function called “MAKE PATTERN”. This is why it takes the polys and creates different types of frameworks.

For this job I use “DUEL EDGES”. I’m not going to get technical but it does cool things. You have to play around with the settings to make the magic happen. We are almost there. The next step is to prepare the model with Simplyfy3d, my software choice for slicing. With this program I can place supports were I want them and define the way it will print . I have spent a lot of time trying to find the best way. However, because my prints have crazy angles every print has its own settings. After printing I like to paint the model to bring out his charm.
